Description

Drika Overton, a veteran of over 25 years as a tap and percussive dance artist, has been a leader in the resurgence of the vital American art of tap dance. Her original choreography and rhythmic compositions, while deeply rooted in the traditions passed along to her by the masters, embody such diverse influences as West African and Afro-Cuban dance and drum, Celtic dance and music, and Japanese taiko and body percussion. The outcome is innovative and captivating, full of visual and rhythmic inventiveness.Overton is the creator and artistic director of the internationally recognized Portsmouth Percussive Dance Festival and MaD Theatricals, a unique collaboration of nationally and internationally recognized jazz and tap artists who have created works that have toured the Northeast: Clara's Dream a jazz nutcracker; Music Hall Follies: A Vaudeville in 9 Acts; and Off the Beaten Path: A Jazz & Tap Odyssey. A recipient of numerous awards, Overton teaches nationwide.
